about

MAYa was named after a song by the Incredible String Band. While still a baby she travelled in a converted civil defense truck on the hippy trail from England to Afghanistan, clothed in embroidered waistcoats and silver bangles with smudged coal around her eyes. Returning to a small town in East Sussex, England, she spent her childhood obsessed with music, mostly in her bedroom dressing up and choreographing dance routines.

As a teenager, too shy to make or perform her own music, MAYa moved to London, where she worked in the experimental music scene, lived in a squat in Waterloo for several years, and spent much of her free time and money traveling to far off lands. During one such trip she visited New York and decided to stay, ultimately finding work in the film industry and writing songs with the band Backworld.

These experiences gave MAYa the confidence to tell her own tales—tales drawn from a life filled with sadness and wonder and wanderlust—through both sound and video. This CD collects together her four EPs for the first time.

Praise for MAYa:
"..the songs slow and languorous, sounding as if you are eavesdropping on secrets you should never have heard. All four songs shine out into the night sky with an ethereal icy beauty." Terrascopic

"MAYa crafts an interesting version of post-hook pop music with a darkly floating voice and minimal accompaniment from Joseph Budenholzer. Pretty rich smoke." The Wire

"Plaintive melodies march through the ether, gaining confidence from unlikely corners of the atmosphere. Beautiful and rare." Dusted Magazine
